Seven Killer Ways To Save Electricity And Money

Saving electricity in your home has many obvious benefits a couple of which are, saving money on your power bill and saving carbon emissions that it takes to generate electricity.

I want to start with a lesson that I learned from my house,

1. Clean or have cleaned the coils on the inside of your air-conditioning unit.

Having your central heating, cleaned and inspected yearly is a very good idea.

There are radiator like coils on the inside of a central air-conditioning unit that the air flows through to be heated or cooled and circulated back into the house. When these coils become clogged with dust and other particles of all kinds that fly around in the air we breathe, an accumulation of these tiny particles restricts the air flow which makes the unit less effective and the motors in the unit work harder, and also makes the entire unit work longer due to the restricted airflow.

Clearing a clogged unit can make a dramatic difference in the efficiency and the cost of your heating and cooling.

2. Stop the drafts.

There are many areas of your house, especially around windows and doors that allow too much air exchange.

I saw a neat door boot on TV that fits both sides of the door for the bottom of it for a quick and simple fix to stop drafts in that area.

Many times these seal between the window frame and the house is not tight enough and will need some caulk to seal the cracks.

3. Replace old Windows

If your windows are very old, replacing them with modern insulated windows can make an enormous difference. Although the initial investment is large, the added comfort and big savings in energy is usually worth it. I plan on new windows and insulated vinyl siding on my house as soon as possible.

4.Your Hot Water Heater

Your Hot Water Heater is an enormous consumer of power. You can reduce the temperature of your hot water to save energy and still have water that is plenty hot enough for everything you need around the house. I have the water at my business turned down all the way so that I can use hot water only, and still have my hands under the water. This may not be enough for your house, where people are taking showers and such, but it is an easy adjustment, so you can experiment with it to get yours set like you want it.

To adjust the temperature of your heater, First, turn off the power to it. Then look on the side of the hot water heater, There are usually two removable panels. Remove the panels, and underneath, you will see a dial that you can turn with a screwdriver to adjust the temperature of the water heater, you want to adjust both dials to the same setting. I would suggest turning it down 10° and going through your normal routine, if it is not made an undesirable impact, repeat the process until you reach the level that is just hot enough for your needs. Another point about your water heater is that although it has some insulation in the shell additional insulation can help conserve energy.

5. Flip the switch

Turn off lights, stereo equipment, TVs, and all the other stuff that we that we use when we're not using it. Turning off lights when you leave the room, even if you think you're coming right back will make a difference in your consumption. Putting a power strip and surge protector on your electronics can be switched off to prevent power drain when not in use as well as protect your expensive equipment.

6. Replace Outdated Appliances

Older appliances generally consume more electricity. So if your washer or dryer or dishwasher or some other appliance breaks down, you may want to consider replacing it with a more efficient model instead of repairing it.

Solar energy is energy from the sun that has been harvested through the use of panels and other such devices to convert the suns energy into thermal or electric energy. There are two ways to harness this, either directly through photovoltaic cells, or through concentration of the solar power. The most popular way of harvesting this energy is through the use of solar panels. Research and development of these panels has been ongoing for decades, and today, they have reached near perfection. Being used on a large scale, they are not commonly seen on homes, cars, even calculators. Since they are incredibly expensive, you can now have your very own do it yourself solar panels.

The size of your solar panels will depend on how much power you need to harness. If you want to get in on the action and create your own basic solar panels, below is a step by step guide on how you can do this:

• First off, here are the things that you will need for this project:

o Basic woodworking tools, such as a saw, drill and screwdriver
o Silicone caulk, which is silicone based filler and sealant that is used to make edges watertight.
o Wood glue
o For the wiring: wire cutters, wire strippers, soldering iron, and a solder

• Step number 1: obtain the solar cells themselves. The easiest way to do this is through internet shopping, because a lot of people are currently selling solar cells there at a cheap price. Make sure that the one you choose to buy has enough panels for the size of do it yourself solar panels that you are planning on building. Never ever buy anything marked as "grade B cells," because there is a tendency for these to be already broken or not as efficient. Try to look for cells that are pre-tabbed, as this will be useful to you later on in the process.

• Step number 2: building your container. While you can choose to use any kind of material for your solar panel container, the easier to work with is definitely wood. Properly layout your cells before creating the frame. Save some wood as you will need this later on for creating the substrate. Cut out the dimensions and glue it together, or use screws. Paint it any color you wish, but make sure that you drill a hole for the wires from the panels to come out of.

• Step number 3: wiring the cells together for your do it yourself solar panels. Wiring 36 cells together can give you as much as 18 volts of power. This is where the pre-tabbed feature of the cells will come in handy to you. Because of this, all you actually need to do is to solder them together. If you did not get pre-tabbed cells, make sure you solder them together before gluing them onto the case.

• Step number 4: this is where the silicone caulk will come in. A dot in the very center of each panel will be enough caulk, because this will give enough wiggle room for the wood to expand and shrink alone with the weather it experiences. This is especially important if you are planning to put your do it yourself solar panels in a place that has no shade. Lay out your cells where you had originally planned them out to be. Glue each cell in place and allow it to properly dry before proceeding with the next step.

• Step number 5: put the wires through the hole that you had drilled earlier on. Put some caulk onto the hole so as to avoid moisture getting in through extended use. It may also be wise to put a connector on to end of the wire, but this connector will depend on what you plan to use the do it yourself solar panels for.

Power Tools and Safety Precautions

Power tools give workers significant convenience and efficiency but they also pose a significant work hazard. Although more of a safety hazard for amateurs with only experience in hand tools, power tools can create many workplace or at-home injuries. Many of these are the result of people not using the correct tool for the job needed or not having enough experience. On a minor level, some common injuries resulting from power tools include cuts and eye injuries, but more serious amputations and impaling can even result from their use. Safety is extremely important when using a power drill, screwdriver, or any tool with an electric current. Any combination of flying materials and bits, the cord, and blades can result in numerous injuries - and even death.

First, as the most important safety measure, don't operate a tool unless you've had proper training. Don't assume that because you've used a screwdriver hand tool in the past that you can automatically operate an electric one. Similarly, even if you have the proper training and experience, inspect the tool before use. This includes checking for missing or loose parts, examining the safety guard, seeing if the blade is dull or loose, and examining the body and cord for cuts and cracks. Additionally, check the shut off function and power switches on the tool to make sure they work and that the tool will turn off easily in an emergency.

The next important safety precaution is making sure you have the right tool for the job. Don't use a large tool for a small job, such as a circular saw when a jigsaw or reciprocating saw is needed to do a fine cutting job. Even when operating the tool, wear appropriate protection. Hand Tool Safety in the Workplace

Accidents in the workplace account for over a million injuries and over a billion dollars annually and a huge percentage of those accidents involve hand tools. Hand tools are such an integral part of our daily work that we can sometimes forget about safety and this can be dangerous - screwdrivers alone account for tens of thousands of workplace accidents every year. This article focuses on common hand tools.

The first step is a safety plan. Assemble all of the tools you will need before starting the job, so you won't have to reach awkwardly or leave your workspace. Make sure that you know how to use every tool and that you have examined your work area for general hazards. Lastly, use the appropriate personal protective equipment and make sure you are not distracted,

Cutting tools are probably the most dangerous hand tool and knives in particular cause the most injuries of any hand tool. Make sure you keep you knives and other cutting tools sharpened, make sure the blade is attached securely and make you use a knife with a retractable blade whenever possible. When you cut keep the sharp edge away from your body and when you are cutting sharp objects like wire don't cut them at an angle to avoid getting cut by the object. When storing your knife, keep it away from other tools.

Hammers, chisels and punches are also extremely dangerous. Most of these accidents occur because of flying particles. Personal protective equipment is especially important when working with these types of tools - always wear goggles or other eye wear. Using the appropriate tool for the job is imperative. A Nail Hammer for unhardened nails and a Ball Peen Hammers are used with chisels, punches, masonry and metal. When using a Nail Hammer make sure you "seat" the nail by tapping it into place and then removing your hand from the striking area. When using a Ball Peen Hammer, make sure the head is larger than your chisel or punch.

Screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers are used for jobs that need special positioning or force. Always proceed cautiously and never over-force screws or bolts. Just like with nails, "seat" the screw before beginning and keep your hand away from the screw. Make sure the blade of the screwdriver fits the screw correctly - too large or too small will cause injury. Be careful not to let your wrenches or pliers slip. This is where most of the injuries occur. Adjustable wrenches should only be used for small jobs, a socket or box wrench works much better when a lot of force is needed.

Hand and power tool injuries are all too common in the workplace, but with a little safety and planning they can be avoided. Make sure that all your employees are properly trained on their use and you will decrease injury and increase productivity in your workplace.
